A BIT OF HISTORY...
“It is a peculiar mountain, where you do not really know where nature ends and history begins”
(Sergio Bonato)
The Altopiano di Asiago 7 Comuni boasts a millenary history. Precious traces of its ancient past are the Assa Valley graffiti, which are engravings dating back to the 1st millennium BC. The Tunkelbald walls (black wood in Cimbrian language) include a 40 m by 7 m surface, where more than 10,000 pictures and symbols were drawn. An area known as Bostel, located in Rotzo, hosts a hut, which was built up according to the style of those ones built up by the very first inhabitants of the Plateau.
The ancient history of the Altopiano di Asiago 7 Comuni and its population still lives in its green mountains and in the memory of its inhabitants. Many locations of this Plateau have got Cimbrian names (Kaberlaba, Ekar, Prunno), while fascinating places like Altar Knotto, the Tanzerloch pit and the Zelighen Baiblen caves recall the presence of magic creatures that fascinated and scared the inhabitants of the Altopiano di Asiago 7 Comuni more than 1000 years ago. Traditions, rituals and legends live again in the Hoga Zait festival, a very special event for those who want to discover the ancient world of the Cimbrian population.
World War I has had an impact over the most recent history of the Altopiano di Asiago 7 Comuni. Its mountains, such as the well-known Ortigara mountain, have been the background of fierce and bloody battles between the Italian and the Austrian armies. Villages were almost completely destroyed and the descendents of the daring Cimbrians were forced to escape to the plains, as they were safer. This destructive war deeply affected the whole territory, which has now become a popular destination visited by thousands of people who want to meditate about the war. Large interventions aimed at restoring and consolidating both trenches and war buildings brought to the recent creation of the Ecomuseum of the Great War – Vicenza Pre-Alps, thus broadening the access to the memorials of the Altopiano di Asiago 7 Comuni.
